PowerVR Technologies a division of Imagination Technologies has today announced that its PowerVR 2D/3D graphics processor design has been granted Millennium Products status by the Design Council after Prime Minister Tony Blair challenged businesses to show that Britain is the creative powerhouse of the world.
The news was announced by the Prime Minister at the launch of the fifth tranche of the Design Council’s Millennium Products initiative.
PowerVR, designed in the UK by Imagination Technologies, is a unique, patented technology that enables high performance graphics for home entertainment devices. PowerVR technology is already used in PCs as well as Sega’s Dreamcast games console and in new arcade machines from manufacturers including Sega, Capcom and SNK based on Sega’s Naomi arcade system.
According to Hossein Yassaie, CEO, Imagination Technologies, PowerVR has already revolutionised the realm of computer graphics, powering both Sega’s Dreamcast console and the majority of new arcade releases. In the new millennium PowerVR will expand its reach even further into the PC market as well as on new platforms like set-top-boxes and handheld devices. We are delighted that as a Millennium Product PowerVR will be included at the Spiral of Innovation at the Millennium Dome.
Andrew Summers, Chief Executive of the Design Council said: We offer our warmest congratulations to Hossein Yassaie of Imagination Technologies for the selection of PowerVR as a Millennium Product. We sincerely hope that PowerVR will continue to be a big success for the company and we hope that Millennium Products status will encourage PowerVR Technologies in further successful innovations.
